Amphibian Classroom

1 June @ 8:00 am - 30 September @ 5:00 pm

Amphibians are one of the poorly understood groups of vertebrates with many misconceptions leading to their aversion. This ‘disgust’, which mostly rooted in their aesthetics, has broadly hampered their biological values too. India has a rich diversity of amphibians, many of which are endemic and a few are only known from a small geographical range. The presently known diversity of amphibians is underestimated as the researcher are still finding species new to science from various places in India.

As a part of the general and scientific awareness, we are conducting a four-month distant learning (online) course. The main topics covered during the tenure of this course are basic systematics (taxonomy and phylogeny), field techniques and photography.
The first session on taxonomy will be organized with the help of specimens in a reputed research collection facility. There will be four field outings, on the last weekend of every month. These field visits are basically to learn field techniques and photography. As part of regular online sessions, participants will be provided with reading material in the form of articles and scientific publication.

Duration:
Four months (June to September, 2018)

Course structure:

This will be conducted with the help of specimens in a reputed research collection facility. This will be a one-day session aiming at basic training on taxonomy and morphological and meristic data collection. For this session specimens from the general collection will be utilized. A detailed datasheet and relevant material will be given to the participants as a reference material.
Four field outings will be conducted on the last weekend (from last Friday to Sunday) of ever
y month at various places in India. During field o

tings, sessions will be conducted on field techniques, systematics and biogeography, data generation, paper writing and photography. Will invite an expert in the respective field as a resource person in every outing. Apart from this, regular online sessions will be conducted providing information about amphibians.

Participants have to submit their reports of all their visits and any small projects they wish to conduct during the period of this course. During this course, we will encourage participants to write popular/scientific articles based on their experience and observation. We will also encourage participants to upload their observations on citizen science websites.
